Secondary Engine Intake Protection and Emergency Filtration

The air safety filter element (inner filter) is the final line of defense for the XE135D engine intake system. Designed to be nested inside the primary (outer) air filter, this element remains in place at all times—even when the primary filter is being changed. Its purpose is to prevent any dust or debris from entering the engine intake manifold during the maintenance of the primary filter or in the rare event that the primary filter media is breached or damaged.

The safety filter is a critical component for engine longevity. Because modern engines are highly sensitive to microscopic particulates, the safety filter provides a secondary barrier that ensures no contaminants enter the cylinder block during the critical window when the primary filter is removed. It is engineered to have a long service life, typically requiring replacement only after the primary filter has been changed multiple times or if it shows signs of physical damage.

• Replacement Cycle: Recommended replacement every 3 to 4 primary filter changes, or annually, depending on operating environment.

• Maintenance Tips: Never remove the safety filter unless you are installing a new one. Removing it exposes the engine intake directly to the environment. If you find dirt on the inside of the safety filter, it indicates that the primary filter has failed or was improperly installed; in this case, check the engine for signs of ingestion damage immediately. Handle with care; the media is delicate and must not be cleaned or reused. If it is dirty, it must be replaced.
